I…don’t know what to think about this decision.
On the one hand, I am glad that this is happening and that both countries are willing to sit down and talk about it and peacefully hash out their differences and de escalate tensions.
On the other hand, I’m afraid that this could backfire before it even starts and the fact that Venezuela has not recognized the ICC’s reccomendation, and they could decide stuff sooner than later.
Comment: u/Cortical
if Venezuela was truly interested in dialog they wouldn’t have held the stupid referendum in the first place.
Unless Maduro finally realized that he’s about to bite off more than he can chew and wants to back down, he’ll just demand that Guyana cede the Essequibo and of course Guyana will refuse and then Maduro will pull a Russia and be like “the extremist Guyanese are not ready for talks and insist on war” or some such nonsense.
Comment: u/Middle_Link428
Caricom will benefit from cheap fuel from both sides
Ali budge and lose votes Madura hold out and live torment Guyana another 5 years.
Comment: u/Class_of_22
I agree. Guyana is probably gonna try to suggest to split the territory between them, which isn’t gonna sit well with Maduro, who will want all of it.
Comment: u/[deleted]
They can’t split shit those lands don’t belong to the government it belongs to Guyanese.
Comment: u/OscarDavidGM
Was the only way to call everybody’s attention. Venezuela has a valid claim, it’s better to sit down and talk.
Comment: u/rhunte
Nothing to talk about, Venezuela has a valid claim to hyperinflation. Good Luck with that
Comment: u/OscarDavidGM
Nah, I’m not talking about you mate. I’m talking about government, and they are going to do it December 14th, I’m afraid.
Comment: u/rhunte
I am also not talking about me, I am 1 million % sure that the Guyanese PEOPLE don’t want to talk about anything, and by extension, the Guyanese Government also should not. I understand that in the eyes of the world, this looks good that we are willing to talk but in reality “not a blade of grass”.
If the ruling party wants to stay in power, the will of the people of Guyana must come first.
Comment: u/monkey-apple
Why would Guyana even entertain this? Maduro knows what he wants and why he’s doing it.
Comment: u/[deleted]
It’s not a bad idea though. It will be fully documented by at least Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Brazil, and chances are that will show the world what a cock Maduro is being. Does that stop Maduro invading? No. But in terms of sanctions and support, the world knows who to back. That might be the best we can hope for now.
Comment: u/freda-freda
Yup plus it seems like it is being initiated and moderated by Brazil. We clearly need their help.
Comment: u/Scary_Terry_25
You get more western aid if you act like you exhausted all peaceful options. Ali playing chess not checkers here
Comment: u/freda-freda
I don’t really see the entire point of this meeting either but I like that it was initiated by St. Vincent and also Brazil will be present. I don’t know what they expect out of this meeting either since it doesn’t seem like Maduro is willing to fold.
Comment: u/Class_of_22
I didn’t either.
Comment: u/Numerous_Cake_7356
Theres nothing left to say, we already made our mind up.
Comment: u/[deleted]
And maduro’s back peddling has begun. How to exit this charade and save face.
Comment: u/PKC350
I feel Irfaan gonna fold and agree to split/dovide the profits between the countries. I think he’s a great leader but idk if he’s prepped to deal with a dictator face to face.
Edit: I might be ignorant on this topic. I don’t think Guyanas leaders in general are prepared, skilled or rehearsed enough to handle a conflict of this level. I’d be glad to know if I’m wrong.
Clearly I’m not well educated on Guyanese politics enough. President Irfaan NOT Imran. My apologies for the disrespect.
Comment: u/GarethwithanH
Guyanese people would riot if they even mentioned a split, and they would be right
Comment: u/freda-freda
Who is Imran? Do you mean Irfaan? He already said the boundary is not up for discussion. Nobody in Guyana is gonna agree to split anything with Venezuela.
Comment: u/PKC350
You’re right! Autocorrected to Imran and I didn’t even realize lol
Comment: u/redena123
No Guyanese in Guyana or abroad would agree to split. Essequibo is ours. Not up for discussion
Comment: u/whitemalewithdick
No one in the world is gonna agree a split is acceptable
Comment: u/rhunte
if they want to ensure they are voted out and run out of the country let them split.
There is nothing to talk about, if it’s the will of his people and they are on board and he’s on board, what else is there to say? Pull up
Comment: u/Class_of_22
Um…I’m sure that he’ll propose that, but it won’t work since Maduro is a greedy SOB who wants it all.
Comment: u/[deleted]
He cannot bro its not his land.
Comment: u/siul9819
Hey a venezuelan here, I don’t know what Maduro want with that conversation, but I don’t think he will propose a split of the territory, in the past ours best diplomatics propose that and almost all the governments rejected it, but if that was the case “splitting” I’m sure it won’t be a 50/50 split, I don’t know but I think we are not going to any war, it is a political situation and most of the people of here don’t wanna go to war.
O feel like a share sovereign over the territory and plans to develop the area and improve the life of the people it’s a better idea, and then in the future let the people choose in what country they want to take part. In the past venezuelans try to develop the area building dams and hydroelectric plants but the Guyanese government block the the construction, and cancel the cooperation plans.
I don’t support any war, and think the diplomacy is the way.
Also if yo don’t believe what I’m saying yo can search in your government archive, form that place is from I find the information of the cooperation plans between our countries.
Comment: u/freda-freda
There was never any plans of cooperation made. The people of essequibo want to remain Guyanese . Lol . You do realize our countries also have completely different cultures also? So are you suggesting alienating us and taking away Guyanese cultural identity from people in essequibo to become Venezuelans? Your comment is nicely worded but clearly there’s propaganda within it.
Comment: u/siul9819
No dude, and what I’m saying is true I had to investigate it for a college project and the only information that I find about it was in your government online archive.
The real difference between us it’s the language dude, all of us live in banana republics, and don’t you think here in Venezuela we have and homogeneous culture, here we have tons of different cultures mixing, Chinese, Africans, Europeans, indians, Arabs, and that doesn’t mean we try to erase their own culture and traditions just saying that we can cooperate and in the future not like tomorrow or in ten years, we can retake the situation make a referendum with the people that are living in the esequibo, (less than 200k) and figure it out if they wanna still be Guyana or not, in any case it’s better than a war I think.
And I’m not alienating anybody, dude, and here is no propaganda of nothing, if there are someone how doesn’t want you to become Venezuelan against your will it’s me.
And thank u to say it’s good worded, I’m not so confident speaking or writing in English.
Comment: u/Scary_Terry_25
Venezuela should focus on its crippling hyper inflated economy and not expansion
Comment: u/freda-freda
Essequibo belongs to Guyana. Was there a map from Spain showing that they took control of essequibo and people there lived under Spanish rule or something? Because that was never the case. You are seeking to erase our cultural identity by saying that essequibo belongs to venezuela .
Comment: u/OscarDavidGM
here’s a defensive and sensitive atmosphere among the people here.
They’re scared and think Venezuelan are enemies. What a shame.
Comment: u/freda-freda
Lol ok so people that wanna annex 70% of our country should be our friends?
Comment: u/[deleted]
What do you mean you dont wanna go to war? You hold a referendum, you annex the land, which is in Guyana. Now you explain you want the best for the people there if Venezuela can control it somehow. Did Guyana contact you and asked to annex the land? Or did Putin and Xi contact Maduro to stirr some troubles so that USA and UK has to divert the forces?
Comment: u/OscarDavidGM
Bro, he isn’t the governmentof Venezuela or something. Just a human giving his opinion.
Chill out. 😂
Comment: u/Prestigious_Ad7074
Maduro will propose have ALL Essequibo to Venezuela. What probably he will receive? Authorizarion for PDVSA explore oil in Essequibo together with Exxon.
Comment: u/Forsaken-North-2897
He’s going to trick Ali, and it’ll be like this. Give me Essequibo and I let you have the entire oil block. Guyanese leadership is corrupt and greedy and only see oil money to steal, and don’t care about the Amerindians that live in Essequibo, so they will agree. Venezuela already has oil, a lot of oil, so that’s not really what this is about.
Comment: u/Harlequin5942
Venezuela already has oil, a lot of oil, so that’s not really what this is about. They don’t have enough oil to sustain their terrible economic and political system
Comment: u/UniverseOnYourSide
Waste of time. Deal was already done a long time ago.
Comment: u/mundotaku
Venezuelan here. The Maduro government is going as a formality to say “they tried to solve the issue in a diplomatic way.” He is going to ask for things no Guyanese would ever conceive. Even if they agree on something, it is very unlikely that Maduro will keep his word.
Just as a reference, Maduro signed a few months ago the “Barbados Agreement” which he promised to freed political prisoners, allow free elections and allow any candidate to run against him in exchange for ending sanctions. Sanctions ended and he has not done absolutely anything.
Comment: u/poppyfairy
kay no offense to any of these commenters, or even yourself OP, but there are some serious misconceptions I feel need to be clarified in this whole thread.
One, the case between Guyana and Venezuela is being heard by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and not the International Criminal Court (ICC). The ICJ is like the judicial arm of the UN, and hears disputes between States. The ICC is more about trying individuals accused of war crimes.
Two, any discussion between Heads of State is just that, talks. There is literally no way that the Guyanese President can go and give Venezuela any land in Essequibo. For anyone in this thread saying that President Ali could go and ‘sign over’ Essequibo’s land or sea THERE IS LITERALLY NO BASIS OR WAY IN LAW, THE GUYANESE CONSTITUTION, that he could unilaterally do anything or the sort (there are ways that countries can cede territory, but NONE of them apply here). Seriously, that fear needs to be cut out right now, because that kind of misinformation that Guyana is going to or is willing to cede any of our territory is really dangerous.
The reason it’s good this talk is going ahead is because it’s going to be mediated. St Vincent and Brazil are going to be there to report afterwards whether or not things went well. Maduro is going to be a lying dog about everything I’m sure, but we have two other parties there to corroborate any reports. Diplomacy is VITAL right now because Guyana is showing the world that we are not the aggressors. We’re not pushing for war. We’re hopefully going to remind Maduro that his own people will suffer if he pulls this insane stunt. We are awaiting the results of the ICJ decision, of which two judges have already said we have sovereignty over Essequibo.
Please, everyone reading this. This is a scary time, and I can’t tell what will happen if this situation escalates, I am praying that it doesn’t. But hysteria and misinformation about perfectly normal talks will do more harm than good.
